Yellowknife street person donates $2k to local youth centre

Charles Delorme, or "Charlie" as he's known by many, recently donated $2,000 of his residential-school settlement to a youth centre in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

Having spent most almost 40 years on the streets, Delorme, 64, wanted to do something worthwhile with his compensation.

"Just like pennies," Delorme told CBC News of donating money to the SideDoor Youth Centre. "But it means much more to me because it's for the little kids there."

The SideDoor Youth Centre provides programs for at-risk youth and offers overnight shelter for homeless teens.

"He said, 'You know, I'm 64 years old. I'm getting a little old and tired. And I just want to say I love you all and God bless.' And the kids all got up and gave him a big hug and that was a very fantastic day," said Garry Hubert, executive director of the centre.

Delorme isn't done giving. He plans to share more of his money with the Salvation Army and his family.
