Running out of juice for your mobile device has to be one of the biggest problems that smartphone and tablet users face during their day. Now, a California teen has come up with a way to save you from a dead phone in just 20 seconds flat.

Eesha Khare, an 18-year-old high school student has put her impressive chemistry knowledge to work by inventing an energy storage device that can charge a cell phone in 20 to 30 seconds, NBC News reports.

Khare says that her cellphone battery always dies, which led her to work on the supercapacitor. The device, which lets you store lots of energy in a tiny space and hold it for a long time, has about ten times the number of charge cycles than a conventional rechargeable battery.

Khare’s invention was part of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona last week, where she took home the Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award and $50,000. Along with Khare, Henry

The winner is a man from Mentor, Ohio by the name of Brandon Ashmore, who downloaded the game Say The Same Thing. For his free download, he’ll receive a $10,000 App Store Gift Card.

In the press release announcing Ashmore’s win, Apple included some other interesting facts about the App Store: it now contains more than 850,000 iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch apps, and is available in 155 countries. Web Pro News also reports the tidbit that every second, 800 apps are downloaded from Apple’s App Store.

Arguably the most interesting part of Apple’s milestone contest is finding out what exactly that lucky winner downloaded. When Apple held a similar promotion for their 10 billionth app, a British woman won when her daughter downloaded the free game Paper Glider, CBC reports.

Google Glass might not have had as much face time at this year’s Google I/O keynote presentation, but it’s still top of people’s minds as the tech giant rolls out the device to the ‘Explorer’ group who have been chosen to start using the product. And as we see more and more people start sporting the heads-up display, it’s leading some to speculate how life will change once many more people start using Google Glass.

While this doesn’t rank highly in the ‘breaking news’ category, you have to admit, Michael Williams was definitely thinking outside of the box when he helped in this rescue mission.

Williams, a resident of Windsor, Ontario, saw a mother duck and two ducklings walking down the street, when suddenly the pair fall into the storm drain, landing in the water about a metre below.

“She started to walk away and we heard noise coming out of the sewer,” Williams told CBC.

He contacted the City of Windsor on his smartphone, a BlackBerry Z10, and while he waited for the maintenance crew to arrive, searched for an app that might help.

“I thought maybe there was an app for duck calls. Thankfully, they have an app for everything and it worked out,” Williams said. “I held it up to the sewer and the two ducks just came out.”

After weeks of rumours and leaked images, we’ve had our first look at the BlackBerry Q5 (not the R10, as many expected it to be called). It shares many of the esthetics of its more sophisticated sibling, the BlackBerry Q10, but wraps it in a brightly-coloured plastic package.

Google has brought back some of that fun today by transforming its Google Image search into the Atari classic Breakout, a simple brick-breaker game (which runs the risk of killing your productivity for the rest of the day ... sorry).
