Sony PlayStation Vita hits the shelves in Canada

Facing a burgeoning threat in the mobile gaming industry, Sony released the highly anticipated PlayStation Vita on Wednesday, placing an all-or-nothing bet on their new portable gaming unit.

And as Dean Takahashi explains, the PS Vita could make or break the tech giant's future with on-the-go gaming.

"This handheld device is Sony's last stand against competitors such as the Nintendo 3DS, not to mention the iPad, iPhone, and all of the other mobile devices out there that have become vehicles for inexpensive or free games," said Takahashi in a Venture Beat story.

Featuring two analog sticks, a rear touchpad, vibrant graphics and a beautiful screen, the PS Vita proves Sony was thinking big when they put their chips all in.

They've made an effort to boost the portable system with PlayStation's back catalog, supported the release with the new Uncharted: Golden Abyss (only available on the PS Vita), and have thrown in a new selection of bells and whistles - a standard pack of augmented reality cards, Netflix streaming and a gyroscope, to name a few.

Check out the video below for a quick sneak peek.

"At first glance the Vita appears almost identical to the PSP," says an article in the Washington Post. "It shares nearly all of the PSP's dimensions, but the Vita couldn't be more different."

"The Vita is sleek, bold, and immediately stunning, unlike the plastic frame every PSP model has shared. The front of the Vita is almost exclusively made of glass, a design shared by Apple's iPhone 4. The Vita doesn't look like a kid's toy; it looks like a serious gadget, a futuristic piece of technology."

You can pick up your PlayStation Vita at Future Shop or Best Buy for $249.99.

What do you think? Are you interested in a PlayStation Vita, or will you stick with your current mobile gaming device? Let us know in the comments below.

I'm not a hater, but that statement kinda makes me want to laugh. A serious gadget XD! Really? Some people are complaining how new systems don't have much good games. Well all systems start out with not so much good games, but they get better ones as time progresses. The 3DS and PSVita games have caught my eye, well, the future ones do. The best option I think is to wait first.

Save your money for the new PS4/XBOX720 or Wii-2.

If they ever come out with one! Rather then spending their time developing this crap!

All i gotta say is they better release greatest hits ps2 games via psn and flash cards.
Those games will still sell especially if they are a series and are sold in a bundle pack.

Why is everyone comparing this to an ipod or a phone? This is a portable gaming system, not a phone. It can play games phones or ipods can't play.

Just bought one and I must say, at $250, its a really great system. The main concerns Sony should have is not the system itself, but having a steady stream of good games coming instead of just ports. Reducing the price of the memory cards is also a must, as it seems that's one of the biggest reasons why people are on the fence about buying one.

Sony has a great system, but its up to them whether it fails or becomes a huge success in the near future.

i bought it and it is AWESOME!!!best graphics ever and the online tech is to die for,FIFA 2012 plays beautifully and Uncharted is ps3 quality style graphics.if you don't like rear nor front touch screen when gaming, you can turn it off in settings.the screen is twice the size of the psp and the 3ds put together.it is so versatile and comfortable to handle and it is a serious hand held machine.already 15-20 games out and no UMDs(thank god) and the sound quality is fantastic.the PS VITA is the most futuristic hand held gaming machine ever.it beats out the ipod ipad,etc...Sony just got a major lifeline with the PS vita...

Wrong part :"Oh I got to go to work!" Paused. The Boss saw you are playing.

I would buy that over a tablet any day. If it was Microsoft I would buy it today (only because I have an Xbox not a PS3). I was thinking about a new smart phone but I would rather keep my old one and buy this. I can see why people wouldn't but I am big on media content. Music, movies, games and the ability to take pics and vids of the kids. I think this launch price will come down also but really it is pretty close to most phones now (without contract). I just have to figure if it is worth it if I don't have that PS3 connectivity.

No thank you. Time to lay off of the Tech. I'll stay with large screens.
      Good luck Sony.

i would wait for a price drop and more decent games to come out for it i'm not big on handheld gaming but i'm hoping that atlus and square enix manage to make to good games for this but this will probably be just another flop like the psp was when it was released it looked good but didnt have the ability to mass produce games due to the umd formatt with the memory disk they should hopefuly be able to mass produce games and hopefully re-release some old nostagia games.

For old nostalgia games, I hope not. Seriously got tired of all the ports that came to PSP. Do agree though on more JRPG's. As for the price drop, I have serious doubts that Sony will lower the Vita price any further. They are making a loss as it is with the price

well, I for one love the PlayStation Vita, i bought the unit, starter kit and Wipeout 2048.
the startup of the game is picture perfect on the oled screen.

People got to learn to stop nagging on the con's and start being happy about the pro's.

FYI: I do not fav one brand over the other i have all next gens handheld 3ds/vita and 360/wii/ps3, and i would not consider a phone to be a gaming device as much as i would consider my microwave to be my stove top cooker

Right on. No need to prefer one company over another. In the end, we're all gamers :)

Thanks but no thanks. Sony is making people's life tough by not selling parts to consumers for cheap DIY repairs. I was naive once, but never again. Sony is going down for good reason.
      • Almo 2 months ago
hey Allan does Apple sell you parts to fix the the products didn't think so
      • WopsRtopS 2 months ago
You had to do it Almo. You just couldn't keep your comments against CRApple to yourself. Now all the CRApple fan boys are going to come out in droves to state things like "CRApple doesn't break down so it doesn't need to sell parts" or "CRApple won't sell parts cause they make the products themselves so they don't fail". Just wait and see... :)

not sure about it... does it double as a cell phone? Like I mean, if I'm going out I"ll wanna carry the item with me that is most practical in every situation and the iphone 4 does all that and fits in the pocket quite well. I think I'll wait a while to see what others are saying before opting to buy this.

Is it really a good thing to be plugged into a videogame 24 hours a day? These people in the video look like PS zombies lol
    • Alex  •  Toronto, Ontario  •  2 months ago
Does anyone read the news anymore? We are in tough economic times and $250 for a piece of shit is not going to sell. Most gamers prefer to game @ home...this will be a serious flop for Sony...sorry!
