Tired parents, rejoice! High-tech stroller folds and unfolds itself

File this one in the "why hasn't someone invented this sooner?" folder.

A new baby stroller can fold and unfold itself with the push of a button.

Aptly named the Origami stroller by 4moms, the high-tech product made its debut last week at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

And get this: the built-in battery that powers the Origami recharges itself up when you push the stroller — therefore you don't need to remember to plug it in at night.

While the rolling wheels generate electricity for the battery, it also powers an LED light that shines in the front of the stroller when mom or dad push it at night — and an optional attachment can power up your cell phone, too.

The Origami won't fold down if it detects someone sitting in the seat.

Speaking as a dad of three, my wife and I no doubt could've benefitted from such as gadget when the little 'uns were babies just a few short years ago. Ah, the memories of wrestling with our strollers to fold and toss in the trunk — and of course pinching the skin between the thumb and forefinger in the process (you know what I'm talking about). And opening the collapsed stroller outside of a mall (in winter) was nearly as fun, when trying to hold the handlebar with one hand (and usually a child or two in the other) and kicking open the small lever at the base of the stroller. Ah, good times.

But as with most new high-tech products, the Origami is pricy at $849.99. It's available to order now, along with optional accessories including Origami Color Kits ($99.99), the Graco SnugRide Series Car Seat Adapter ($59.99) and Handle Bar Bag with Cell Phone Charger ($39.99).

Here's a short video to see the Origami in action:

I agree. What an unsafe idea...and it promotes laziness. It takes two seconds to unfold a stroller.

I believe they meant to say it "helps 'Advanced age' parents who put off parenthood for their careers and are now unable to meet the physical requirements of the job, this is okay though as they are now unable to have any more children anyway and can dump untold sums of cash on trash like this".

Yeah, no kidding. We have electric toothbrushes, razors (Gillette, Schick) and mascara wands. Now if only I can electrically power up my Fleshlight...

Sounds nice and all. But I don't mind the 'scars' of parenthood over an over priced stroller that would only be used a couple of times and does not look all that stable.

great....so now they can spend MORE time INDULGING the little brats and not caring whether they bring them up to look out for others (especially the elderly!) .....when will this "self centred parenting" phase end? I cannot stand most of them on the street. Dragging their little ones WITH their strollers into sushi or coffee shops. Take the little beggars to the park and PLAY with them. Most parents of youngsters today...are crap! Self involved, self serving, self absorbed....you see them pushing their fancy strollers and not interacting with their children, but rather yakking f***ing endlessly on their cellphones or texting. HELLO! Talk to your kid instead! They don't have children.....they have ACCESSORIES!!!

Hey that gives mothers some extra seconds in a day to yap on their cellphones!

As a mother of two and someone who ran a small daycare, I can testify to many a pinched finger and even the occasional pulled muscle when trying to wrestle a baby, toddler, grocery bag and stroller. I can safely say that no lasting trauma resulted from that exercise. Not like a squashed baby due to malfunction, anyway.

And it only $850.00 dollars. LOL.

This is useless. Invent items that help children instead of a fast, expensive way to stuff a stroller in a trunk. I am an expecting mother and I would rather see someone invent something that helps our children learn to walk or talk. Another useless way to waste your money. Also just a scam. They have a stroller that you just give the handle a hard tug and it does the same thing. $700 cheaper too!
