Giant plumes of methane bubbling to surface of Arctic Ocean

Methane bubbles trapped in the arctic iceRussian scientists have discovered hundreds of plumes of methane gas, some 1,000 meters in diameter, bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean. Scientists are concerned that as the Arctic Shelf recedes, the unprecedented levels of gas released could greatly accelerate global climate change.

Igor Semiletov of the Russian Academy of Sciences tells the UK's Independent that the plumes of methane, a gas 20 times as harmful as carbon dioxide, have shocked scientists who have been studying the region for decades. "Earlier we found torch-like structures like this but they were only tens of meters in diameter," he said. "This is the first time that we've found continuous, powerful and impressive seeping structures, more than 1,000 metres in diameter. It's amazing."

Semiletov said that while his research team has discovered more than 100 plumes, they estimate there to be "thousands" over the wider area, extending from the Russian mainland to the East Siberian Arctic Shelf.

"In a very small area, less than 10,000 square miles, we have counted more than 100 fountains, or torch-like structures, bubbling through the water column and injected directly into the atmosphere from the seabed," Semiletov said. "We carried out checks at about 115 stationary points and discovered methane fields of a fantastic scale — I think on a scale not seen before. Some plumes were a kilometer or more wide and the emissions went directly into the atmosphere — the concentration was a hundred times higher than normal."

What we are talking about is the release of billions of tons of methane gas regionally… where gas is released in the arctic and antiarctic which changes the local atmosphere over time; the more gas that is released effects the warming in that region and causes more gas to be released; this gas has been trapped in permafrost, The regulation of the earth’s temperature is dependent on areas of the planet maintaining a variant of hot and cold, which seasonally cause freeze overs and thawing. The convection currents from these cycles pull cold air down from the northern and southern hemisphere; mixing with warmer air creating equilibrium of temperature around the earth. When a huge mass of earth changes its mean temperature, it no longer supplies the earth with cold convection currents. This is a run-away effect; meaning a tipping point has been reached where the earth will cycle more and more towards warming. most think in terms of whole earth temperature to cause global warming rather than regional warming which removes the cooling components of our atmosphere…seasonal thawing is very imporant in "oceanic thermoclines" where temperature layers seperate at certain depths keeping surface waters at mean coeficent of evaporation, we can see the warmer thaw waters not advancing and displacing the usually warmer waters to reach its maximum vapor point; which caused a draught in Africa... 10,000,000 will die so far...

Pft. I hate stupid comments from people that don't understand anything about how climate affects EVERYTHING.

Yes, while the snow has collected in PA, areas all over have no winter...I wonder what the temperature is Jake's nose is... since he cannot see past it...

Says papa whale to mama whale "OH I've got gas", "don't let it out yet someone will notice" says mama whale, "to late" says papa whale "don't worry, no one will know for whose to notice?"

how about burning it as it reaches de surface? The CO2 from the combustion would be 20 times less harmful than the methane ...
    • Gendora  •  New York, United States  •  5 months ago
This is serious, you people who post should be put out in a field somewhere to die, you live in your own little world where you don't even know what a billion tons of any gas is, you think air growns on trees where all the trees are gone. Wake up people, serious things need to be done...

Good luck, Gendora. These articles attract a flock of goof balls every time one appears. Judging the opinion of the overall American public by the comments of Yahoo posters would be a big mistake.

Good luck Jack R. These are "the overall American public" as are you. You posted here also...right? or are you an elitist?

Hi, I'm a nerd. the atmosphere has a mass of 5×10^18 kg, or 5.5×10^15 tons. thats 5,500,000,000,000,000 tons of atmosphere, in case you dont know how to read scientific notation, Gendora. "a billion tons", as you put it, is approximately %0.000018182 of the total atmosphere. that's as dangerous as farting in a warehouse. nerd rant over.

In spite of this terrible news, the Republicans in our congress just put off outlawing the manufacture of 100 watt incandescent light bulbs, because of their constituents' complaints. Seems a lot of people prefer their convenience over the climate and environment. They say they don't want the government telling them what to do. Isn't that special? What a bunch of ignoramuses most Americans are. I think the Chinese are right. America is a nation in decline.
      • gbe 5 months ago
Get a life on incandescent bulbs. I printed out the 3 pages of hazzards on the CFL's in case one may break. Don't remember having to do that with incandescent bulbs. Besides shutting of all air/heaters, taping of the room, closing window and not using a vacumn, be sure you don't breath the dust. General Electric got the contract for these bulbs and the CEO of GE is Obama's adviser. Republicans no, Democrats yes.
      • JohnA 5 months ago
The Chinese are smarter than the rest of us. They did not ban incandescent light bulbs. Let the rest of us waste our money on CFL & poison ourselves with Mercury. That is how America will be in decline. This is another indirect tax on the rest of us. The Chinese must be rubbing their hands in glee. They will manufacture the expensive CFL for the idiots like us and this will pay for their incandescent light bulbs free of charge.

You are right John, we are the stupid ones and time will show the problem with these GE CFL's

so all the whining grows. WHY dont we go capture it and USE IT. This is a free reneweable power source, and if we dont it could cause harm, so whats the down side. Go harvest it. it must exist under the ice in large bubbles. should be a simple harvest, no drilling required.
      • Anonymous 5 months ago
You couldn't be any more wrong. It is extremely difficult to harness, if not impossible in such masses. Not to mention completely unstable, and not a very good energy source due to it's instability.

Actually there's a city in Russia that's already doing this. Unfortunately, they're near a shallow deposit. Most methane clathrates are at depths WAY beyond our current abilities to mine or capture.

Serious question for the scientists here :

Why give an evolutionary advantage to individuals whom have not developed it on their own? Many of you know exactly what the problem is and what exactly is so dangerous about it. Why waste time trying to bicker with individuals whom by natural law will face the selection pressures of such an event? Does such an organism deserve preservation from extinction?
Should not the efforts of the scientific community be seeking ways to preserve those things essential to our survival over the course of the coming selection event?
