Adam co-founded the Beastie Boys with Mike 'Mike D' Diamond and Adam 'Ad-Rock' Horowitz in 1979.

The Beastie Boys had attempted to make several comebacks recently, but Adam's cancer treatment ended up postponing the release of their latest album, as well as preventing them from performing live.

Adam Yauch had not appeared publicly with the band for some time, and was noticeably absent when the Beastie Boys were added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a month ago.

Celebrity tributes are already flooding in, with Boy George tweeting: "Such sad news about Beastie Boy Adam Yauch. A fellow Buddhist and part of hip hop history!! R.I.P!"

As soon as the news was confirmed, #RIPMCA began trending on Twitter - a tribute to Adam, who was also known as MCA.

Adam is survived by his wife, Dechen Wangdu and his daughter Tenzin Losel Yauch. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.
