Body found in Winnipeg yard

The police identification van is parked in the lane, near a Simcoe Street dumpster, on Friday.

A dead body has been found in the backyard of a home in Winnipeg's West End.

Members of the police service's homicide unit have been notified but police are not saying anything more.

Officers called to 700 block of Simcoe Street at about 7 p.m. on Thursday but no information about the incident was released until Friday.

And police would only say at that time they were investigating "suspicious circumstances" after an "unidentified item" was located.

They confirmed it was a body at 1:30 p.m. after several media outlets had been reporting that for several hours.

Police have not said anything about it being a decomposing body, as has been reported.

People in the area told CBC News Friday that they could detect a foul odour in the air for several weeks.

A tarp now covers part of the backyard of one property.

Maureen Lamoureux lives next door.

"You know I'm going to start to cry," she said. "Darn it anyway. This is all just too much for an old lady. For them to find a body there, right next door to me, it's kind of hard to take."
