Business owner shot in neck out of coma, recovering in hospital
A Calgary business owner who was shot in the neck two weeks ago is now out of a coma.
Yusuf Mohamed was attacked inside his money exchange store on 17th Avenue S.E. on Dec. 5 by two masked men. He managed to get to the Vietnamese restaurant next door where staff called 911.
His friend Mudhir Mohamed went to visit him in the hospital this week.
"I said, 'Yusif, now you're back to normal I'm so happy' and he started laughing and he said, 'This is life,'" said Mudhir.
Mudhir says Yusuf was in a medically induced coma for several days after he was shot. He is now out of intensive care and is expected to be released in the next few weeks.
Security tightened
"We may celebrate after he is discharged and I will make a big gathering and thank to God," said Mudhir. "He's an important guy — he's our main guy. He's served lots of people here in Calgary."
Southeast business owners are stepping up security after Mohamed was attacked.
His money exchange business was the second one to be targeted in recent weeks. Maqsood Ahmed, another business owner in northeast Calgary, was fatally stabbed after closing his store in Castleridge.
Mudhir has organized meetings with his fellow business owners and taxi drivers in the city.
The group is working together to keep each other safe by implementing earlier closing hours, more surveillance and security guards.
