Books were flying off the shelves at libraries across the city at the fastest rate yet last year, resulting in the Calgary Public Library reaching a record high in items borrowed.
With 17 million items borrowed in 2011, the number exceeds the previous year by more than half-a-million items borrowed.
“The library is a community gathering place,” said Grant Kaiser, manager of marketing for the Calgary Public Library.
“Calgarians do business, meet up with friends, and even read their own books and use their own computers in our branches because they love the buzz, the people, and the sense of life in today’s library.”
Calgary only falls behind Toronto, Los Angeles and three of New York City’s libraries in terms of borrowing in North America.
It’s estimated that there is at least one library user in 70 per cent of Calgary households.
