Calgary woman was confined, sexually assaulted for 3 weeks

Calgary police are trying to find out how a woman was held captive in a northeast home for three weeks.

They say the woman said she was physically and sexually assaulted during that time.

Staff Sgt. Mark Hatchette said the woman made her escape yesterday.

"She was able to manipulate the accused and attend a business close by whereby she called 911," he said.

The 27-year-old woman directed police to a nearby home in Skyview Ranch, where they questioned and arrested a man living there.

Police say there are still a lot of unanswered questions, including why no one reported her missing and why there were no reports of suspicious behaviour — as many people were seen coming and going from the home during that time.

Neighbour Mo Assadi says the whole thing is a surprise to him.

"Last week we heard the music going all night," he said. "That was the only time. Usually they are quiet people."

Police say the man and woman were in a relationship earlier this year.

The accused, Troy Lemke, has had many run-ins with police.

He was charged with breaking and entering, wearing a disguise and using an imitation firearm in an incident in February 2012. Lemke also faces charges for possession of a golf club for a dangerous purpose and resisting arrest in March 2011.

Both those cases have been put over to the fall. He also had an emergency protection order issued against him from a woman in 2007.

He is now charged with assault, sexual assault, assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats and forcible confinement.

Lemke appeared in court today, but has yet to find a lawyer. His next appearance is scheduled for July 15.

Police say the investigation continues and they expect more charges will be laid.
