        Herb M, you hit the nail in the head! Most of the public sector is like that while in a private sector it is, in most companies, totally different story.

        How many times we have heard a case in which a wife and a husband basically worked the same job, one for a public/government, the other one for a private sector employer(s) and one ending up retiring with 5,6 times bigger pension than a spouse. That is rather pathetic, isn't it?

        Socialism in public sector, kapitalism in private. Isn't that strange?

      I can't speak for the other Atlantic provinces, but after living in Nova Scotia these past 5 years and seeing what the employers are like, it surprises me not at all that there are no local companies on the list. The mentality here has got to be 50 years behind progressive provinces. You're nothing but a body or a number here, and that's exactly how they like it.

        It's the same here in New Brunswick. I find the most prevalent attitude here by companies is that everyone is replaceable so 'sit down, shut up, and do what we pay you to do or we'll find someone else to'.

        thats probably because the tax environment in those places discourages business, which makes the jobs more scarce and then makes employees less valuable and easier to replace. when employers are competing for employees they treat them better.

      The only thing I dislike about Canada is vacation entitlement. Geez, we rank among the lowest in the world! 2 weeks!? That's nothing!! Europe standard is 4 to 5 weeks PAID! Why the heck do we pay such high taxes for?! I wouldn't mind paying 30% if everyone was entitled to 5 weeks vacation! What the heck is so wrong with that?!

      The best private employer should offer to employees: higher salaries than a competition, company pension plan, extended medical and dental benefits, provincial medical service plan and profit sharing.
      Without all the above mentioned no one shoould be considered for any of the top 50 spots.

      Government (or public sector) employees basically have all the above (with the exception of a profit sharing, of course, but they usually have very generous severance packages in the case of employment ternination) so the question is how in Canada there can be two parallel systems!?

      There absolutely should not be any difference in benefits, rights, and obligations between the employees in a private and public sector.
