Canada's economy added only 2,300 jobs in January according to Statistics Canada, far fewer than the 24,500 that economists had predicted.
The unemployment rate edged up to 7.6 per cent, a 0.1 per cent increase, as more people searched for work.
There were there were 23,700 more Canadians looking for jobs last month.
Employment decreased in Prince Edward Island in January and was little changed in the other provinces, according to the report released Friday.
The number of jobs rose in educational services; information, culture and recreation; and in "other services," such as personal and household services.
However, employment declined in professional, scientific and technical services; and in finance, insurance, real estate and leasing.
Compared with the same period one year ago, the number of full-time workers rose 1.2 per cent, or by 170,000. Meanwhile, the number of part-time workers slipped by 1.2 per cent, or by 41,000.
