Canada Post pleads for patience over backlog

Canada Post says it expects to have a backlog of mail in its major centres caused by the recent lockout of employees cleared by the end of the week.

John Caines, a spokesman for the Crown corporation, told CBCNews.ca the system dealt with a record volume of 70 million pieces over the weekend — about three times the normal volume — in a drive to deal with the backlog.

Last week, Canada Post stopped collecting letters from large circulation corporate clients in an effort to slow the influx of mail into their already strained system.

All mail being brought into the corporation is now being accepted again, domestically and internationally, Caines said.

Caines also again appealed to customers for patience as Canada Post works through the backlog, saying the volume in centres like Montreal and Toronto is still "very, very heavy."

"Our major plants are still very full," Caines said Tuesday. "All of the plants have an excess, but we hope to have it cleared out by the end of the week."

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has accused Canada Post of refusing to pay its workers the overtime needed to alleviate pressure on the system.

Irwin Nanda, CUPW's national director for the Toronto region, said he's heard from several members in and around the city who report mail piling up.

"Carriers came into a lot more mail than they would normally see on Monday when the plant's not running full-tilt," he said of the weekend sorting push.

"If they haven't finished their route in the eight hours, they have to bring that mail back."

Canada Post's Caines said carriers are authorized for one hour of overtime at the beginning of their shifts to give them more time for sorting, as well as some en route overtime as needed. Casual workers have also been brought in to work in major centres, he added.

But Nanda called for Canada Post to bring in a "clean-floor policy" for overtime for all carriers, not just the sorters, to clear the backlog in a day.

"The one hour just won't cut it," he said.

Postal workers across the country were locked out June 14, after 12 days of rotating strikes.

Canada Post workers were legislated back to work by the federal government after its bill imposing a new contract on them received royal assent on June 26.

The government said it was necessary to get Canada Post working again to protect the country's recovering economy.

The Opposition NDP led a lengthy filibuster, arguing the bill trampled the postal workers' right to collective bargaining.

The time it has taken CP to get back up to speed is inexcusable. As of this morning they were still not accepting Priority Post mailings. Management and all employees should be embarrassed by the inefficiency of this organization.

Can I say kiss my donkey, The employees were and are not responsible for the actions of corperate Canada Post (mis) management.. The mail was being delivered prior to lockout and the unionofferedto resume at the old wage untilla contract was agreed upon. Learn the facts before you open your mouth.

bbq_ribs-- chill out, people are allowed to have opinions much like your rude waste of a comment. what remains is there shouldn't have been a strike, but there was.. and people need to get over it. Stop getting defensive, welcome to free speech and Just Common Sense isn't the only one who has that opinion.

bbq... I HAVE the facts. The mail isn't moving efficiently! This article says so, and so does my first hand experience. If you're a CP employee and are not embarrassed then you are likely part of the problem.

I have barely gotten any mail in the last two weeks yet I seem to still be getting tons of flyers...where's my bills and my magazines? I don't get it.
      • david 10 months ago
Most Mags were held back by the companies. Contact them to see if the back issues were sent out as of yet. The flyers can be opted out of if they are clogging up your box. Visit you rlocal post office and opt out of admail.

the fact that we might not want flyers isn't the point it's why are they getting through but not anything important. I feel the same I've never gotten a ton of mail but there was usually mail every day some days my box has been empty, when you'd think there'd have been tons every day
      • LORI 10 months ago
Exactly...for over a week, I didn't receive a single item of mail, when normally I receive 2 or 3 a day. But I got 10-20 flyers delivered a day! Apparently the strike did not stop that crap from flowing. Do the mail carriers by any chance get paid extra $ to deliver the flyers?

My Master Card account was due on July 10th.......I did go to the bank and put money on it......but I have yet to see the bill. One wonders if it is held up in the mail or is M/Cd using the strike as an excuse to delay delivery of the bills so that we go past due and they can collect interest.....I am one of those strange people who pay their ncredit cards every month and also try to keep my banking off the computer

        You can see online statements...
      • Melissa 10 months ago
        And pay online.
      • Siobhan 10 months ago
Online statements are not always a good idea, I used to have ebills for everything and then my computer broke down and it took over a month to fix it and in the mean time I had no idea how much my bills where, now I do both I have ebills and as a back up I still ask for a paper statement and @GrumpyOldSOB I'm with you I have yet to see a utility bill for over 2 months now and same with my Shaw bills as well.

Somehow when Canada Post says anything i feel skeptical.
    • C M  •  10 months ago
I'm glad they issued this statement. However, I am still way behind with my mail. I doubt everything will be sent out by the end of the week, but I can only hope. In the meantime, I will continue receiving daily junk mail and flyers, which apparently were not affected at all by the strike...
      • Poopikinz 10 months ago
I can't believe how much junk mail and flyers i am getting yet my tax return and bills and magazines don't seem to be getting to me.
      • david 10 months ago
Junk can be averted, go to your post office, and opt out of junk mail! Very simple to do. And a tax return? In July?
      • don 10 months ago
A LC can only carrier out so much..Flyers are 20% of C.Post revenue, and thats what will get delivered when required.
    • storyteller1333  •  10 months ago
not, you poeple wantedto strike, costin us the middle class the servises we relied on and now u want us to give u time to fix YOUR mistake? not

it was a lockout NOT a strike !!!!!
      • P. Lum 10 months ago
The Lockout occurred after Postees went on strike, The truth must be told in whole not in part. Too late for Postal employees to gain public sympathy!! The more you whine, complain and blame management the more public wrath will deservedly be directed your way!
Get to work and do what you are extremely well paid to do!!

ive been waiting for my mail :( some causes alot of hassle... pls as a resident of canada, solve it immediately.......
    • P. Lum  •  10 months ago
Quit complaining and get to work doing what you are extremely well paid to do!!!!!!
You waste more delivery time conferring with each other about how "abused" you are, which is really a tactic to allow more mail to build up so that you can justify asking for overtime to get ti all delivered. Put on your Nike's and "JUST DO IT"
    • M.K.  •  10 months ago
Well, we will be patient but what about the late fees that we need to pay because of delayed delivery of bills we receive in the mail through Canada Post? Sorry, I have absolutely no understanding and patients for this people. They are as unreasonable as it gets.Really let them go and see what kind of job do you think you will get that pays as much for the education you have.
    • Elspeth  •  10 months ago
Would it help if they didn't have to deliver junk mail with the regular stuff?
    • coco_nut  •  10 months ago
I wouldn't doubt if some of the backlog is just being disposed of.Gee sorry folks, no idea what happened to it.
I have had mail missing since long before the strike.Mail containing gift cards, Christmas cards etc.. for my children. I have had to tell family to either send things by courier or wait till we see them because if mail goes missing your S.O.L.Not surprising to me at all that I know I have been mailed things over a month ago that I have yet to received.I will eat my words when and if I ever do.
    • Cud be me  •  10 months ago
If they would only deliver REAL MAIL and not all the flyers and crap that comes with my bills, maybe they would get the mail delivered and there would not be a backlog.

Then again that is probably the only way Canada Post makes any money.

I mean really, when was the last time YOU sent a letter. I don't even send to Revenue Canada anymore since I found they have a drop box on Hurontario in Mississauga.
    • MERAL G  •  10 months ago
..they tell US to be patient?! I'm sorry, but you guys went on strike in the first place complaining about your wages, and the public got shafted because of it, be grateful you all still have jobs
    • JEAN PRIEST  •  10 months ago
Since CP employees came back to work, I have only received junk mail...a few bills, but no packages, cheques (that I know are in the mail). It seem to me that the trickle of mail has not a lot to do with volume, but a lot to do with the fact they were ordered back to work and not wanting to work overly hard to get caught up. and unlike those of us who don't have the option of not working because we are unhappy with our working conditions or those of us who run our own businesses , they chose to go on strike and cause the Canadian people to find other options. Do they think that we will not continue to use the other options after and find we really don't need their services after all....then what will they do???

The reason for the delay in delivery, is the rotating strikes and lockout. Now the overpaid slobs want overtime to clear out the mess they helped create. I don't believe it!
    • Rob  •  10 months ago
Plea all you like. I am out of patience. You held the country at ransom and now you want us to be understanding that the backlog you caused still hasn't been worked through? Sorry, no sympathy here.
    • Denise  •  10 months ago
we live in a new neibourhood and they don't even deliver to your door we have mailboxes like they use in rural areas and i KNOW they only deliver to us 1 maybe 2 days a week ((have inside info)) and not the 5 days they are supposed to so i say fire them all and start new. and at a lower rate of pay no one NEEDS 29 bucks an hour to stand and sort mail!!!! hell i will do it for $14
    • michel  •  10 months ago
i FINALY received my blow up doll THANK you posties LOL
    • Stan  •  10 months ago
Canada Post employees are already overpaid. If you want to strike and disrupt millions of Canadians that are essentially paying your fat salaries, then you should all be replaced by people that are willing to do your job. What we need is a similar move that President Regan did with the air traffic controllers. Fired them all. You are all cowards. I have not received any
mail since the strike. You want public support? Not this way.
    • bella_gamer  •  10 months ago
I have absolutely no sympthy for them.I expected stuff I needed for my bday in June...ordered them in May so they should be here for my bday and it's the middle of July and it's still not there. Bills are coming in late, people's pension is coming in late...they should be ashamed of themselves...This whole damn situation was handled poorly to begin with.
