    Canadians blasted with more heat

More hot and sticky weather is pounding parts of Saskatchewan, Manitoba and southern Ontario on Monday, with Winnipeg poised to hit official heat wave status.

Winnipeg could reach a high of 34 C, the third day in a row of high temperatures for the city.

The technical definition of a heat wave is three days in a row with temperatures of 32 C or more.

Earlier, a problem at a substation and demands of the heat prompted Manitoba Hydro to take the unusual step of asking people, particularly in Winnipeg, to cut back on their electricity usage.

Around 5,000 customers were without power for many hours over the weekend.

But the problem at the substation has been fixed and there are now no concerns about distribution.

In Regina, the mercury is expected to reach 32 C following Sunday's 33 C heat.

Parts of Ontario, which has also been hit by high temperatues, were expected to have slightly cooler temperatures Monday.

After Sunday's record-breaking high of 35 C in Toronto, the city was expecting a high of around 30 C.

CBC meterologist Johanna Wagstaffe said a cold front bringing thunderstorms to southern Ontario isn't expected to break the humidity dramatically Monday but that humidex advisories have ended for that area.

A number of high temperature records were broken over the weekend, from Saskatchewan to the Maritimes.

With the humidex, the temperature felt like the 40s in many places.

High temperatures are expected to persist for much of the work week in many cities, including Toronto, Montreal, Regina and Winnipeg.
