Cape Breton Highlands dismissal prompts warning for hunters

Nova Scotia RCMP are reminding hunters to stay well away from school zones after some shots were fired near a Cape Breton school and sent staff and students into high alert.

More than 300 students at the Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre Academy in Terre Noire were kept inside the gym for several hours on Thursday after gunshots were reported nearby.

"It turns out that we believe it was hunters that were in the area," said RCMP Sgt. Al Leblanc.

"We want to just remind people that hunters cannot hunt or discharge a firearm within 804 metres from a school, so this is important. You should never be hunting near a school."

It's unclear whether the hunters will be charged.

Crisis counsellors are at the school Friday and will be again on Monday to talk to students and staff.
