Cheryl Tiegs: Kate Upton's Sports Illustrated Cover Is 'A Step Toward Playboy'

Cheryl Tiegs made the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue more than once, but the revealing nature of the latest edition, featuring model Kate Upton, had the veteran shaking her head.

"It's not my favorite Sports Illustrated cover of all time," Cheryl told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Monday's Access Hollywood Live.

When Billy suggested Kate's itty-bitty, barely there bikini was "two strands away from Playboy," Cheryl agreed.

"I agree with that. I like so many of the pictures inside. Sports Illustrated always has that fine line of being very 'sexy/girl next door/earthy/kind of athletic,'" she said. "This is a step toward Playboy, I think."

While it isn't in Cheryl's taste, she thinks Kate, herself, is a delight.

"She's lovely in person and actually even prettier in person than that cover," Cheryl said.

In fact, Cheryl had praise for all the models in the issue.

"I was just in Las Vegas with all the Sports Illustrated models, and they are drop dead gorgeous and very sweet," she said.

It was Cheryl's own sweetness that actually helped lead to her elimination on Sunday night from the latest "Celebrity Apprentice" cast - the first this season.

"I went into 'Celebrity Apprentice' thinking that I could work with the team and be kind, be good. That's how I built up 12 companies in my lifetime," Cheryl said. "I haven't been backstabbing and mean-spirited and I thought well, 'I'll show America that it's possible to be a nice person and to succeed.'"

And Cheryl blames the team she was on for her "Apprentice" demise.

"Well, the women's team -- they were rather tough to work with," she said. "I liked the men's team a lot and still keep in touch with a lot of them."

Kate Upton looks more like a Playboy Playmate than a top fashion model. NOT that that's a bad thing.. Just saying..

Cheryl wasn't so uptight when her nipples were showing through the fishnet back in the 70's.....don't get me wrong, I am all for that, I'm just sayin.

As long as I can remember, the covers of Sports Illustrated have always had sexy laden covergirls. I never had any 'girls next door' look like the SI covers! I wish I had!! Majority of magazines don't have everyday, run of the mill women gracing
      their covers.

This is coming from the woman who posed on the cover of the SAME magazine wearing a see-through fishnet top??? I applaud both choices for the record.

Although we all cant deny the fact that the bathing suit was a bit skimpy, she wore it well and looked amazing. If thats the swimsuit the magazine wanted, then thats what they wanted. Plus everyone knows, sex sells. And over the years the girls wear less and less. A shame, but true. Men like to drool and woman like the attention. What are ya going to do?

I agree, that SI cover is just too much exposure. Some things are classier when a bit is left to the imagination. But kind of hypocritical coming from Cheryl Tiegs who wore that white fishnet excuse for a swimsuit!

When I looked a little closer at Cheryl Tiegs, I couldn't help but wonder if she's gone under the knife? The left side of her face and lips look a little lopsided and fake looking. As for her comment regarding SI covergirls, she sounds like a hypocrite to me.

i don't blame kate upton for looking trashy on the cover but i do blame the magazine for choosing that picture. Very raunchy!

There comes a time when women "of a certain age" have to make a decision as to whether they are going to try to continue going with the look they had at 25 or if they are going to age a little, hopefully with some style & grace. Cheryl T. is still trying to maintain the look she had as a younger women which in an odd sort of way just calls attention to the fact that she is older. I think she would be wise to adopt a more mature woman's look a little bit...shorter softer hair style, more subtle makeup, more age appropriate clothes. Better to look like a stylish, sophticated 60 yr. old than an over-the-hill 40 yr. old.

Before I was old enough to buy a Playboy, the Cheryl Tiegs nipples showing through the fishnet photo appeared in SI. It was better than Playboy.

For anyone to actually bash a woman in her mid-60s because of her looks is obviously lacking in their own self confidence. She was simply asked about her opinion on a cover she has done herself many many years ago. If you like trashy shots of your boobs pouring out over (and under) your bikini top, more power to you. It reminds me of a girl wearing a pair of jeans too tight and having a mushroom affect around the belly, yuck. As popular and anticipated as this magazine is, you'd think it would have classier photos. The girl is gorgeous but they need to fire the rest of the clan involved in the decisions with the cover.
