Chez Cora suing St. Boniface cultural centre for $97K

The Chez Cora chain of restaurants is suing the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain in St. Boniface for more than $97,000, claiming it lost money when the centre underwent renovations last spring.

In a statement of claim filed with the Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench last week, Bon Dejeuner Ltd. says in May 2014, the cultural centre "undertook alterations and/or additions to the building that resulted in an interruption of the plaintiff's business and resulted in lost revenues.

The restaurant chain claims the renovations continued until Chez Cora closed its location inside the centre in August.

Chez Cora claims it lost revenues totalling about $86,223 as a result of the renovations.

It is claiming that amount in damages, along with $10,918 over a restaurant sign that was allegedly retained by the cultural centre when the restaurant moved out.

The allegations contained in Chez Cora's statement of claim have not been proven in court.

Stella's Cafe will take over the space vacated by Chez Cora and offer longer operating hours, including dinner and late nights.

Chez Cora, which had been operating at the cultural centre for the past nine years, was open for breakfast and lunch only.
