Cities need infrastructure money: Mayor

Clifford Lee says help from Ottawa is essential for a new source of water supply for Charlottetown.

Charlottetown mayor Clifford Lee says, with the election underway, municipalities will be lobbying for more money for infrastructure projects.

The federal budget last week from Stephen Harper's Conservative government did not contain any new infrastructure money for P.E.I.

As a result, many cities and towns would be left without the money to complete major projects, Lee said.

The Canadian Federation of Municipalities will be making it an election issue during the federal campaign, the mayor said.

"We'll be looking to all federal parties to clearly state where they are and what their position is on infrastructure funding for municipalities," he said.

Charlottetown wants to move ahead with a new source of water supply for the city at a cost of $20 million, Lee said, adding that his city also wants to make improvements to the storm sewer system.
