City bus catches fire on Portage Ave

A mechanical issue cause a city bus on Portage Avenue to catch on fire.

The eastbound lanes of Portage Avenue have been blocked off after a city bus caught on fire Saturday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to the 1200 block of Portage Avenue where heavy smoke was pouring from a transit bus at about 3:20 p.m.

CBC News spoke with the bus driver who said she was driving down Portage Avenue when she started to smell smoke.

She said she pulled over and that's when the back of the bus went up in flames.

Firefighters put on scene put out the fire. The bus driver told CBC News there was only one passenger on the bus at the time of the incident.

No one was seriously hurt, but the passenger was checked out for smoke inhalation.

Police said the bus had encountered a mechanical issue that caused the fire.

They area asking drivers to avoid the area until the scene has been cleared.
