City to make decision on raceway development project

City council will consider development options for property near Windsor Raceway next week.

Coco Paving has been trying to develop the area since 2007. The racetrack closed two years ago.

Staff are now recommending council approve the proposed project, which would include retail stores, a roundabout and protected land for species at risk.

City engineer Mario Sonego said even if council votes in favour of the development , it will be a while yet before construction begins.

"Having development done in 2015 or begun would be pretty aggressive," said Sonego.

One holdup has been concern over species at risk, but the province has now approved a permit.

So, some plants and animals will have to be moved, before any of the developments begin, said Sonego.

"We'll be moving pretty good if we could move the species at risk next year. You can't all do it all in one part of the season, so, if they could get to doing some building out there in the fall of 2015, they'd be doing quite well," he said.

City council meets again next Monday.
