City of Edmonton reaches tentative agreement with 8,000 workers

The City of Edmonton says it has reached tentative agreements with five city unions that represent more than 8,000 full- and part-time staff.

The multi-year agreements cover the years 2014 to 2018.

The tentative agreements include wage increases and benefit improvements that total 13.5 per cent over five years, the city said in a news release. Further details about the deals are excepted to be released after ratification votes are held early in the new year.

The unions included in the tentative agreements are: Civic Service Union local 52 (primarily inside workers), the Amalgamated Transit Union and DATS (Edmonton Transit), the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 30 (primarily outside workers).

“We believe these tentative agreements represent a fair deal for both the city and employees, providing service stability for citizens and ensuring the city remains competitive in the labour market for the long term,” said Jeff MacPherson, the city’s human resources branch manager in a news release. “We want to thank the leaders of the five unions for their efforts and commitment in concluding this process.”
