Hundreds of people blocked the entrance of Hydro-Québec's office in downtown Montreal on Wednesday afternoon in a protest that was deemed illegal under Bill 78.
CLASSE, Quebec's more militant student association, urged students to join its members in Square Phillips to protest against capitalism and Jean Charest's Liberal government.
Students were soon chased away by about 50 riot police officers and headed west on Sainte-Catherine Street where the demonstration slowly dwindled to a halt after passing through Montreal's Quartier des Spectacles.
Though police declared the rally illegal under Bill 78, the law enacted in May to help put a stop to student protests, no one was arrested.
Other student associations are urging their members to head to the polls and vote for or against continuing the student strike.
CEGEP college students at 14 institutions are supposed to return to classes between August 13 and 17.
