Come on down! Saskatoon man wins on The Price Is Right

When he heard Drew Carey speak the magic words "come on down," Chris Ooms couldn't believe his ears.

"I thought there was another guy out there by the name of Chris Ooms," he said. "I was stunned, because that normally doesn't happen to me."

Ooms, who is from Saskatoon, was selected as a contestant on The Price Is Right during a taping in March. He was down attending his grandson's wedding in California, and when his daughter presented him with tickets, he jumped at the chance.

"We went to Target, we picked up three white T-shirts, and we made our own T-shirts," he said. "It said Canada on it, it had a flag on it. The Price Is Right. Come On Down."

Ooms said competing on the game show is a lot more difficult than it looks. Between the audience screaming and the hot lights, Ooms said it can be hard to stay focused.

"Very, very, very hard," he said. "Once you're on there, it's totally, totally, totally different. The prices are so different over there. and it was very, very challenging."

It was also very challenging to keep quiet about his winnings, which included $8,000 in prize money and a laptop worth about $2,000. Ooms had to sign a waiver, promising that he wouldn't talk about the show until it aired earlier this week.

"For eight weeks we had to be quiet," he said. "We told them, of course, 'Watch The Price is Right. We were there.' That's all we could say."

Now, Ooms is revelling in his new found fame.

"The phone hasn't stopped ringing off the wall," he said. "What would have happened if I would have won the big one?"

Ooms hasn't received his prizes just yet, but expects to soon.
