Couple survives icy plunge into Last Mountain Lake

Two all-terrain vehicle riders are OK after their machine broke through thin ice on Last Mountain Lake, RCMP say.

The pair, a 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, went into the water around noon Tuesday.

They were not too far from a dock at Regina Beach and, according to police, they managed to get out of the frigid water by climbing on the ATV, which remained partially submerged.

However, RCMP noted the two were fully underwater for a short period of time.

When they got out of the water, they went to a nearby fishing shack where they found dry, warm clothes.

The pair did not need any medical attention, police said, but the scare did prompt RCMP to issue a warning.

"Lumsden RCMP have been made aware of other instances that vehicles have either been partially or fully submerged on Last Mountain Lake," police noted. "This is cause for great concern as today's incident could have had a much more devastating end result."

Police said people seem to be ignoring messages about the dangers of venturing out on the lake.

"Despite a number of warnings regarding the unsafe ice conditions in many areas of Last Mountain Lake, there continue to be similar incidents recurring," RCMP added. "Traffic on the ice continues to be strongly discouraged due to the unseasonably warm temperatures we have been having this winter. As a result, this has made for unpredictable and unsafe ice conditions."
