Critically injured Toronto woman stranded overseas

A Toronto man has taken to Twitter and Facebook to help airlift his sister back to Canada from Croatia, after she ended up on life support after falling overboard a catamaran.

Artem Leibenko says his sister Anna is a free-spirited, fun-loving person who was supposed to come back from a European adventure this week — but is instead in an induced coma in a Croatian hospital.

"She basically slipped and fell three metres down, hitting the side of the boat," Artem told CBC News.

Doctors in Split, Croatia, don't have a prognosis, but Anna suffered internal brain bleeding, a fractured skull and fractured bones in her face.

To make matters worse, the 24-year-old Seneca College graduate did not have travel insurance. Artem has taken to social media to raise enough money to cover her hospital bills and airlift her back to Toronto.

The total bills could be more than $100,000. By Tuesday evening he'd collected about $30,000.

"I'm just trying to get her back here," he said.

According to Foreign Affairs, Canadian consular officials in Croatia and in Canada are providing assistance to the family.
