David Beaulieu picks judge trial in assault, confinement case

Moncton woman pleads guilty to Dieppe bank robbery

A 40-year-old Saint-Paul man picked a judge-only trial on Monday after being charged with assault and confinement of a woman in the greater Moncton area last month.

David Beaulieu is accused of unlawfully confining a woman and committing aggravated assault against her between Aug. 9 and 19.

Robert Rideout, the accused’s lawyer, told the court on Monday that Beaulieu has elected trial by judge alone in the Court of Queen's Bench.

He also waived a preliminary hearing.

Beaulieu is banned from having any contact with the complainant and a publication ban prevents the woman from being identified.

Beaulieu will remain in custody and a trial date will be set at a later date.

The RCMP say they received a tip on Aug. 19 that a man was driving around with an injured woman in the back of his van.

Later that summer afternoon, the police located the vehicle on Regis Street in Dieppe and conducted a traffic stop.

The driver co-operated with the police and opened the back of the van and that's where police found an injured woman, who was taken to hospital.

Beaulieu was arrested and had a bail hearing on Aug. 21.

But part way through that hearing, he abandoned his attempt to be released.
