Dawson Creek cabbies accused of sexual assaults

A Dawson Creek taxi company is under investigation after two women and a 13-year-old girl came forward with allegations they were forcibly confined and sexually assaulted by cab drivers.

Mounties say they received a complaint on Jan. 25 that the 13-year-old was lured into a taxi and promised a free ride home. Instead, the victim alleged she was locked inside the cab and sexually assaulted by the driver.

The suspect in this case has not been identified.

Staff Sgt. Milo MacDonald said that investigators discovered two more alleged female victims, both adults, of similar incidents dating back as far as October 2011.

A suspect in one of the cases was identified and has been arrested. Police say charges of sexual assault and forcible confinement are pending against a 55-year-old man.

MacDonald also said they are attempting to identify a second suspect.

The RCMP have issued a search warrant at the office of Golden Cabs, one of only two taxi companies in Dawson Creek, and are in the process of interviewing more witnesses.

A dispatcher from Golden Cabs said he did not know anything about the allegations and referred questions to owner Abraham Koshin, who could not be reached.

MacDonald said people travelling alone should be vigilant.

“There have been no attacks on groups of people, so people travelling by themselves are more vulnerable,” he said. “I think that it’s important for parents that are concerned to have safety discussions with their kids and to give them good advice on how to react if somebody makes an inappropriate comment or inappropriate advance to them.”
