Media will always have to report on the tough stuff. But we know that Canada is full of compassionate individuals, inspiring projects and stories worth celebrating. Here’s just one.
On the last weekend before Christmas, Toronto resident Katie Hewitt was running errands on the holiday-crazed downtown streets when she was approached by a smiling woman bearing a small package.
The woman politely handed Katie the package and was off. “I looked at her like she was nuts and was immediately skeptical instead of grateful,” says Katie, who nevertheless unwrapped the package to find a book and a little note stating: “To a stranger, from a stranger. Enjoy this read and happy holidays.” This was a purely random act of kindness. Nothing demanded in return. “We’re all so caught up in our own errands, we tend to be self-involved, even at Christmas. It’s easy to forget that the holidays are about generosity, and it’s nice to be reminded of that.” It’s a gesture we could all offer year-round, and one Katie plans to as a New Year’s resolution: Paying it forward. The holidays are in the books, but hopefully it’s books that help keep the holiday spirit alive throughout the year.
