Deer Lake snow woes puts strain on town crews

Friday marks the official arrival of spring, but in towns like Deer Lake, snow is still the hot topic.

The western Newfoundland town has seen about 560 cm of snow so far this year, which is much more than usual.

Environment Canada says the yearly snowfall average for Deer Lake is about 420 centimetres.

Mayor Dean Ball said it has been tough on the employees who handle snowclearing.

To show its appreciation, the town reached out to thank them this week.

"We actually took them out for breakfast yesterday morning as a thank you," he said.

"For the last six, seven weeks of weekends, nights, early mornings — its unending."
