Firefighters suspect a discarded cigarette may have caused a three-alarm blaze inside the garage of a rowhouse unit in Orleans Wednesday morning.
Ottawa Fire Services received the call at 6:17 a.m. and heavy flames were coming from the garage at 146 Parkrose Pvt. when firefighters arrived. Paramedics treated the tenant's 25-year-old son on scene for smoke inhalation — an injury the young man got while trying to put out the fire.
He is in serious but stable condition in hospital.
Fire Services spokesperson Marc Messier said the son discovered the fire in the garage and quickly went inside to wake up another occupant. The two escaped safely and the father was out running an errand at the time of the fire.
The fire was contained mostly to the unit of origin, Messier said, but fire crews had to open up the walls in the adjoining unit at 144 Parkrose Private to ensure the fire had not spread.
Damages are estimated at $200,000 for the building and $100,000 for its contents. The fire is still under investigation.
