Doaktown is clarifying its shale gas position, insisting the central New Brunswick village is not against shale gas exploration or any other industrial operation.
The village council passed a resolution on Feb. 9, outlining that it wanted the provincial government to complete a hydro-geological survey of its aquifers.
The council passed that motion to ensure its water supply would be protected.
But Doaktown Mayor Charles Stewart said in a statement posted on the village's website that the council’s position has been misconstrued.
“The mayor and village council have worked closely with SWN Resources and their agents with their efforts in and around our area last summer. SWN Resources have been highly professional and co-operative in their dealings with the Village of Doaktown. The Village of Doaktown and SWN Resources are committed to continue to work together for our mutual benefit,” the statement said.
SWN Resources owns the majority of licences in the region.
The mayor’s statement said explicitly that the council is “not against fracking, hydraulic fracturing, forest operations or any other industrial operation.”
The mayor also said anyone misrepresenting the village’s position “may be subject to legal action.”
