Don't clean up Outer Ring Road mess, David Brazil tells volunteers

As messy and, let's face it, downright disgusting as the litter is on the sides of the Outer Ring Road, Transportation and Works Minister David Brazil is telling volunteers to lay down their garbage bags and let his workers take care of it.

The spring thaw has revealed piles of trash on both sides of the province's busiest highway, and route to the Robin Hood Bay Facility.

Brazil told the St. John's Morning Show Friday, volunteers need to resist the urge to clean up the roadway themselves.

"While I appreciate people wanting to volunteer to keep their province and their communities clean, the reality particularly on the Outer Ring Road is that safety is an utmost concern when you have volunteers up there," Brazil said.

Second litter blitz set for July

Workers trained to work on the highway will clean up the Outer Ring Road from Logy Bay Road to Portugal Cove Road June 14.

Much like last year, crews will close off the section of highway as the clean up takes place.

A second road closure is scheduled from early July between Portugal Cove Road and the Team Gushue Highway.

"We select times where it's less of an inconvenience for people and that we can ensure safety of our crews on the road," he said.

Brazil said signs advising of the looming road closure will be posted in the coming days.
