Drone made by 3D printer built by SFU's Avian Robotics team
A group of students at Simon Fraser University has built a drone, or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), with parts made by a 3D printer.
"Drones in general will be the next up and coming industry, and there's a lot of uses for it," said engineering student Mark Anthony Wijaya.
Wijaya said the drone could be used by first responders trying to assess a potentially dangerous situation.
"Why we are using a 3D printer as the medium to manufacture a drone is it reduces the cost tremendously," he said.
"It's actually amazing to watch a 3D printer print because from nothing you suddenly have this physical representation of what you had visualized in your mind," added fellow student, Ashkay Budhiraja.
The students will be showing their drone off today at SFU's Global Community Open House at the school's Surrey campus.
