Televisions, laptops and other popular electronics will now cost a little more in Manitoba due to new recycling fees that come into force today.
The new environmental handling fees apply to many electronic products sold in the province, including TVs, desktop and laptop computers, printers, microwaves and DVD players.
The fees range from as little as 40 cents for smaller devices, such as MP3 players, to as much as $23 for larger items such as TVs.
The fees are part of a new e-waste program in which residents and businesses can drop off their end-of-life electronics, free of charge, at several locations, according to Electronic Product Recycling Association Manitoba.
But public reaction to the new fees were mixed on Wednesday, with some saying it's a good move for the environment and others arguing it's just another tax.
