Edmonton Humane Society closed to some cats due to space crunch

The Edmonton Humane society is no longer accepting cats surrendered by their owners because the shelter is struggling with a “serious shortage” of space.

“We have been getting in more cats than we can house,” Anthea Smith, the society’s director of animal health, wrote in a release Friday.

“Overcrowding of cats in a shelter puts them at increased stress and risk for disease. We desperately need the public’s help in providing homes for these shelter cats.”

The shelter said it has seen more cats being dropped off than are being adopted in recent months, and is urging people to consider adopting a pet.

However, the humane society will continue to take in any stray cats that are brought in.
