The Edmonton Remand Centre may find new purpose as the city's new Canadian Multicultural Centre.
"We know the remand centre is going to close in the next 12 months," said Mayor Stephen Mandel. "It could be repurposed. It has a gymnasium. It has office space."
The multicultural centre would be a downtown home for emerging cultural groups in Edmonton.
"I've had a couple tours of the building," said Mandel "It looks a bit discombobulated, but, when you get into it, is quite renovatable."
City staff will inspect the condition of the building and the renovations that would be needed.
Mandel also suggests city staff take a closer look at the new Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre which has a field house, a pool and basketball courts.
The province is opening a new remand centre in northwest Edmonton.
