Employees Willing to Cut Pay to Work from Home

Telecommuting may be the ultimate win-win situation for employers and employees.

Employees want the freedom and fringe benefits that come with working from home, while employers could save big bucks on rented office space and possibly salaries.

According to a recent survey of current telecommuters conducted by Staples Advantage, 40 percent of employees would be willing to take a pay cut in order to be able to work at home. Of those, 74 percent would be willing to relinquish between 2 and 5 percent of their salary and 20 percent would part with 10 percent of their pay, the research found.Respondents also said they would give up their favorite TV show (54 percent), forgo an extra hour of sleep (48 percent) or swear off a favorite food (40 percent) rather than stop telecommuting.

According to the survey, 86 percent of telecommuters say they feel better and are more productive when they work from home.

    Telecommuters say they are:

    • Happier and healthier – When asked to draw comparisons, telecommuters say their stress levels have dropped 25 percent on average and their overall happiness increased 28 percent since working from home. Seventy-three percent even say they eat healthier when working from home.
    • More loyal – Without the trek to the office – on average, a 77-mile round trip for respondents – 76 percent of telecommuters are more willing to devote extra time to work and say they are more loyal to their company since telecommuting.
    • Better balanced – More than 80 percent say they now maintain a better work-life balance.

Businesses that allow their employees to work from home are also saving on more than just office rent and salaries. The telecommuters surveyed said they provide their own office furniture (87 percent), office equipment (60 percent) and office supplies (57 percent).

The trend looks like it's catching on. Forrester Research predicts that as much at 43 percent of the U.S. work force will be working from home by 2016.

Even though there are a few negative comments, work from home option provides choices to people.

For example, a mom or dad who wants to be with their kids, this is a great option. Similarly due to the technology most office jobs can be done from home with the same efficiency without any commute.

There are numerous legitimate work at home jobs out there offered by reputed companies such as Humana, KForce, Enterprise Rent a Car, American Express etc.

You can click my name to see the website where several work at home jobs from reputed companies are posted.

By the way as a warning, to avoid scams never pay any money to get a work at home job. If they ask for money to get a job then it is a scam.

If American's weren't so lazy maby some jobs would stay here rather than go overseas.
Everyone wants to get paid for doing as little work as possible....sad....very sad.
What happened to American work ethics?!
      • Nabeshin 10 months ago
Americans are not Lazy, they just wont work for $2/hr like people overseas. That hurts jobs creaters (rich people) bottom line. That's the reason why the jobs keep leaving America.

What happened to the Company work ethic?
Used to be you'd work for a company for 20 years, retire and get a pension to help in your old age. Now as soon as you get OLD, they hire someone YOUNG for HALF or a QUARTER of your salary and 'let you go'

Sometimes companies will fire/let you go just before you qualify for a pension(for those companies that still have those things).

Don't fall for this propaganda. Anything you can do at home can and will soon be done in china or india... our leaders are seeing to that now.

Stupid argument. Obviously many jobs can be done in a number of locations, the only exceptions being services where the provider and the recipient must be in physical proximity or the provider must be in physical proximity to the work item. But we can't all be plumbers and massage therapists. Maybe if the company can save some $$ by having people work at home, jobs can be preserved.

Sorry, but Scallywag is right. There may be certain companies or careers, or certain levels that can be reached in certain companies, where working from home is a viable choice, but for most office workers, telling them they can "work at home" is an easy first step to "your not in the office when we need you" and an easy excuse to get rid of someone.

Corporations here now treat their workers worse than slaves..Slaves are assets that must be fed and housed to retain value. I mean, as a slaveowner, you’re expected to provide for them when they become old and infirm, you couldn’t put them down like an old dog.

Worker bees can be laid off and they are no longer your problem when they get old.

Telecommuting cuts down on gas, car maintenance, and childcare. It could eliminate the need for a second car in most homes. Therefore, since the employee's cost of living is lower, a lower paycheck makes sense. If I could work from home, I would not need my vehicle or $200/wk in daycare. I could conceivably take a $1000 decrease in take-home pay each month and still live slightly more comfortably than I do now.

I completely agree. In addition, we would all be doing our part with saving the environment by not releasing daily toxic fumes into the air. I believe the workforce that are able to allow employees to work from home or remote should do what they can to implement this change throughout the world.

You expect to work at home and also take care of your kids? At my company, people who work at home have to sign an agreement that they will not be the primary care giver for children during work hours. When my kids were pre-school age, I still had to have them in day care because I could not work while caring for an infant/toddler.

Of course many jobs will not allow you to work from home, but for those who can, take the deal, just amount you save on gas, meals and the commute is worth more than a few dollar an hour.

i will agree with most of this since i do work from home. i feel like i have more control over my work day and i am much happier about that. only thing some cost do rise while working from home. Like i have to buy more coffee instead of having free coffee at work. i spend bit more on my utilities since i am home during the day. But i do save a ton on gas, i fill up maybe once a month. food cost down since i don't go out and eat. i get to watch my court shows while i work. plus the extra sleep i get since i don't have to drive to work is amazing!

The way our leaders are taking us, pretty soon you'll be working for no pay, and sleeping in your car.

just this morning my wife an I witnessed two contractors working outside of the Pennsylvania Macaroni Factory in the strip district. It took both of these fellows fifteen minutes to put up one white little piece of siding while smoking cigarettes. Lazy, lazy, lazy and we wonder why illegals are taking our jobs.

the facts of life..... working from home equates to paper shuffleling ... it creates nothing....the act of product creation is what generates wealth.....without a ceated product, there is NOTHING to sell.if you have nothing to sell, you only barrow ( the repubs are good at that )from peter to pay paul. sooner or later you must pay your debt. you can not expect to be paid if you do not produce.
