The family of a 32-year-old Ottawa cyclist, who died in hospital Sunday after he was struck by a vehicle nearly three weeks ago, released a statement to police Wednesday.
Nathan Anderson’s parents, sister and extended family thanked the people of Ottawa for trying to save his life after he was sent to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said a vehicle struck his bicycle while traveling on Carling Avenue near Archibald Street on Feb. 2 at around 2:30 p.m.
“Our gratitude goes out to all the police officers and emergency services personnel who were so close and acted so quickly that they managed to get Nathan to the trauma unit with his heart still beating,” the family said in the statement.
The family described him as a “committed cyclist” who preferred to get around the city by biking, walking, and using public transport.
“Please keep on doing whatever you can to keep the streets of Ottawa safe for its cyclists and pedestrians,” they said.
Police witnessed the collision as they responded to a call about an impaired driver who had been refused alcohol at an LCBO at the Hampton Park Plaza.
In the statement, the family thanked staff at the LCBO for contacting police.
Glen Carkner, 44, of Ottawa was charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm and impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
Police said those charges will be upgraded accordingly in light of Anderson’s death.
The family has asked for continued privacy.
