Fiona Conway joins CBC News as director of programming

Fiona Conway comes to CBC News from ABC News in New York.

Fiona Conway, an award-winning producer and news executive, has been named the new executive director of programming for CBC News.

Conway, who is coming to CBC News from ABC News in New York, started her career at CFRA radio before moving to Global and then to CTV, where she held several senior and executive roles.

At ABC News, she took on a range of jobs — including senior producer of Good MorningAmerica and five years as senior producer of ABC World News Tonight.

“I am honoured to have been asked to return to Canada and to join such a formidable news organization,” Conway said in a statement. “I have been really fortunate at ABC News to have been a part of some of the biggest news stories of our time. I can’t think of a more exciting next chapter than my new role with CBC News.”

Conway is a two-time Emmy Award winner for her work on ABC's millennium special and its Sept. 11 coverage, and she has won a range of other awards, including two Gemini Awards.

Her most recent role with ABC News was as executive director of news services and client services.

“I am thrilled to welcome Fiona back home to Canada,” Jennifer McGuire, editor in chief of CBC News, said in a statement. “Her career accomplishments to date are tremendously impressive, and her talents will only enhance what is already one of the world’s finest news organizations.”

In her new position, Conway will help set the direction of all news programming and will directly oversee a broad range of news and current affairs programming, including flagship programs The National, Marketplace, World Report and the fifth estate.

Conway steps into a role previously held by Heaton Dyer. She will start with CBC News on July 23.
