Suspicious fire destroys Petitcodiac food bank
Arson is suspected in a fire that destroyed a food bank in Petitcodiac, N.B. Sunday night.
The fire is at the SPOT — which stands for Support People of Today. The facility operates as a weekly food bank and a used clothing depot.
Local Fire Chief Gerald Jones said five crews with 75 firefighters were called to the scene at 5 Mill Rd. at about 7:30 p.m.
He said it appears the fire was deliberately set.
"The fire marshal and the RCMP did a preliminary investigation last night. It's not 100 per cent sure that it's conclusive yet, but it is suspicious for sure," said Jones.
The building is considered a complete loss. The food bank had moved to the location just two weeks ago after putting a lot of work into renovating.
Jones said the building is a former Department of Natural Resources forest ranger station that operated at the location for about 50 years.
There's no word yet on the cause.
