A 109-year-old downtown Ottawa home was heavily damaged Monday by a fire that took firefighters more than an hour to get under control.
A two-alarm blaze at 179 Waverley Street in the city's Centretown neighbourhood tore through the old three-storey house starting around 1:45 p.m.
Firefighters said the age of the home caused concern the fire could spread quickly. The blaze did cause about $300,000 damage.
There were no reported injuries. Two people live in the house but were not home at the time.
One of the owners of the home, Tony Gariano, said the building was 109 years old. He also does not know when he will be able to return home.
"It's just a little bit of shock right now," Gariano said, "I guess I'm just curious what started it."
Waverley between Elgin Street and Cartier Street was also closed for a short time.
