Firefighters battle blaze at furniture warehouse in Labrador

A fire broke out at a furniture warehouse in Happy Valley-Goose Bay early Friday morning.

It started shortly after 3 a.m. at the Notre Dame Agencies warehouse.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, the building was fully engulfed in flames.

"There was thick smoke showing from the building," said fire chief Bob Hinks.

The front end of the building has been destroyed.

"The warehouse is actually full of mattresses, furniture, all brand new stuff for the local market here, and it's a very stubborn fire to get out," Hinks said.

Firefighters said the building was so tightly secured that they had to use heavy equipment to breach the warehouse walls just to get at the blaze.

"We had a hard time getting into it," Hinks said. "It's a really hard fire to fight."

No injuries were reported.

Forestry workers were monitoring the situation to ensure the fire doesn't spread to the surrounding woods.

There's no word yet on what caused the fire.
