Firefighters put out small Labrador blaze

Brush fire near White Cresent, in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Firefighters in Happy Valley-Goose Bay had another woods fire to deal with Tuesday.

Volunteers got to the brush fire quickly and put it out before it spread.

Witnesses Kathleen Crane and Morgan Knoll said the fire was deliberately set by a young boy.

“He had his lighter and everything. And he started the fire and we told him to stop,” they told CBC News.

“We tried to put it out. We were trying to put it out with sand ... but it got too big and out of hand, so we called the fire department.”

The fire damaged an area of brush less than 25 metres long.

A forest fire that started late last week on the nearby Canadian Forces base burned about 700 hectares before it was contained.
