Firefighters training for new gear at Corner Brook laser tag maze

Corner Brook firefighters have been spending a lot of time at the local laser tag maze, but not for fun and games; crews have been using the location to train with some new equipment.

Capt. Geoff Tulk says the scenario being played is that a firefighter has crashed through the ceiling and ends up lying injured and covered in electrical wires.

The equipment they're testing out is a RIT PAK III, a portable air supply system, and firefighters say it will help them rescue their own when they're in trouble.

"If we get one of our guys, our firefighters, that are down and they call out a mayday then we have this particular piece of equipment if they happen to run out of air or they break their face piece that we can go in and give them air and keep them alive while we perform our rescue," said Tulk.

While the black lights in the maze are on in the video from CBC's Jeremy Eaton, firefighters normally conduct their training with all the lights off and use a thermal imaging camera to see what they need to do.

"A great facility there that's all full of mazes and we can take it and we can simulate an actual fire grounds with the sounds and he actually has the fake smoke in there, and it really, really helps us out with our training," said Tulk.

Tulk said firefighters will continue to use the facility to train firefighters with new equipment in an appropriate environment.
