Fires force hotel, duplex evacuations

Two significant fires forced several people into Winnipeg's rainy morning streets on Friday.

Guests at the Holiday Inn on Portage Avenue, near Moray Street, woke up to smoke and alarms just after 6 a.m. on Friday.

A small fire in the kitchen created smoke that got into the hotel's ductwork. The building was evacuated for about an hour before people were allowed back in.

Crews were also called to a duplex on Sherbrook Street, betweem Ellice and Sargent avenues, at about 6:30 a.m.

A fire in the basement prompted that building to be evacuated.

The fire then spread to the roof.

The platoon chief saidf firefighters were in the basement when fire spread above them. They were told to evacuate because the building was not safe for them anymore.

Firefighters are still on the scene and Sherbrook is closed to traffic in the area.
