Fishing boat has close call off Cape Breton coast

A fishing boat that began taking on water last night off the coast of Cape Breton was escorted safely back port.

Crew on the boat, the Sulia'n, contacted the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Saturday night. The vessel was about 150 kilometres east of Sydney at the time.

A Cormorant helicopter and a Hercules aircraft were dispatched from CFB Greenwood. A Canadian Coast Guard ship, the French Navy vessel Fulmar and a fishing vessel also responded.

Capt. Liam Mather speaks for Maritime Forces Atlantic.

“A local fishing vessel, the Kate Cordel, had pulled along side the Sulia’n and passed a water pump to her. So she began pumping water and a French navy vessel was in the area and helped monitor the situation until our Coast Guard ship arrived — that was around 4:45 this morning,” he says.

Mather says no one was hurt. The Coast Guard vessel escorted the Sulia'n to port in Glace Bay.
