Former Easter Seals Ambassador wants to run for NDP

Former Easter Seals Ambassador, Jennifer Coughlin, is seeking the nomination for the New Democratic Party in District 16, Cornwall-Meadowbank.

Coughlin said she is motivated to run for office "by the failure of past governments to properly serve and help people with physical and intellectual disabilities."

She says she also wants to help people living on low incomes.

Coughlin is a quadriplegic as a result of a childhood accident. She was the Easter Seals Ambassador in 2000.

"As a person with disabilities, there's a lot of issues that I have with the current way that the government works," said Coughlin.

"The NDP, they are so great and they are so community oriented. And I just felt that it would be a great way to get my issues out and to help other people with very similar issues."

Coughlin is a graduate of the Business Administration Program at Holland College.

The MLA currently representing the district is Ron MacKinley. The Liberal nomination meeting for the district has not been scheduled yet, but MacKinley told the CBC that he plans to seek the nomination.

The Conservative nomination for the district is scheduled for Thursday evening. Michael Drake, chief of staff at the office of the official opposition, is the only candidate.
