Mandela, 93, released from hospital after minor surgery, presidential spokesman says

JOHANNESBURG - Former President Nelson Mandela was released from the hospital Sunday after an overnight stay for minor diagnostic surgery to determine the cause of an abdominal complaint, a spokesman for the country's current leader said.

Spokesman Mac Maharaj said the 93-year-old Nobel peace laureate had undergone a laparoscopy, a procedure that involves surgeons making an incision in the belly to insert a thin, lighted tube to look at abdominal organs.

"The doctors have decided to send him home as the diagnostic procedure he underwent did not indicate anything seriously wrong with him," President Jacob Zuma's office added in a statement.

Officials had not disclosed where he was being treated to protect his privacy.

Earlier in the day, Zuma had released a statement saying that Mandela was "surrounded by his family and is relaxed and comfortable."

"The doctors are happy with the progress he is making. We thank all South Africans for their love and support of Madiba. We also thank all for affording Madiba and his family privacy and dignity," said Zuma, referring to Mandela by his clan name.

Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison for fighting racist white rule, became South Africa's first black president in 1994 and served one five-year term. He now is officially retired, and last appeared in public in July 2010.

On Sunday, well-wishers prayed for Mandela at Regina Mundi church in Soweto, a former centre of anti-apartheid protests and funerals.

In 1997, Mandela spoke at the church, calling it a "battlefield between forces of democracy and those who did not hesitate to violate a place of religion with tear gas, dogs and guns."

More ANC crime promoting, infastructure-destroying, communists worshipped by black supremicists, the UN, and products of the public education system? He was a good man but had some screwed up ideas about the economy of SA.

Privateer: He wasn't as bad as Zuma! And I fear he will never die. Even if he does, Malema will be even worse... In my life I've lived in Canada, the UK, married a Rhodesian girl and moved there for a time, after it was destroyed I went back to Canada and then went to South Africa from 92-97 (I now live in Canada again). I visited South Africa often. It was a beautiful place and the quality of life for all was much higher. If Suid Afrika could have the National Party minus the racism, discrimination, and tyranny they'd be much better off than with the Communist AFRICAN NATIONAL Congress. The ANC is just a black nationalist party.

Suid Afrika will be the next Rhodesia. Zuma and Malema hate the whites and especially the Afrikaners. Most whites have military training, are well educated, and know how to fend for themselves unlike the blacks so if things get much worse there then they will need to defend their culture. Most whites want a society with equal races; the blacks want privileges and want the government to favour them with even more handouts.

Nelson Mandela did not stop Apartheid; nor did the UN and the sanctions, nor the Soweto protests; it was white voters who chose to end it in a referendum.

Explain that to me in more details, I don't see any evidence of that in his country.
      • Canuck Common Sense 2 months ago
Robert Mugabe and Jacob Zuma could explain that to you.

It really makes me laugh when I read one news article that says Mandela was released from hospital with no problems, and then I read another on the same headlines page that the guy had to have minor surgery before being released. Which is speculation ?
