Former United Church buildings on P.E.I. looking for new purposes
Two former United Churches on P.E.I. are looking for a new purpose and new homes.
The New Dominion United Church and the Kingston United Church are no longer operating.
Their congregations merged in the summer with a congregation in Cornwall and the Cornwall United Church was renamed the West River United Church.
Officials with the Cornwall Pastoral Charge have called for tenders for the two buildings.
Kevin Sanderson, chair of trustees, says the church buildings would be great for a cottage, summer home, community theatre, wedding chapel or even a year-round home.
"The one in New Dominion was basically built in 1855. So it's an older frame structure, very beautiful, ornate inside, woodwork and it's very typical of an old country church on Prince Edward Island," he says.
"The Kingston church is more recent … less than 30 years old. And it's a typical church structure but it's open inside, open concept, but a more modern building than the other building."
Any successful bidders will have to remove the old churches from the properties and take them to new locations.
That's because both properties have cemeteries which will continue to be maintained.
The tenders close on April 15.
