Gas prices: More groans at the pumps for motorists

For the seventh consecutive week, gas prices in this province have once again nudged higher.

The Public Utilities Board's latest adjustment has increased the maximum price that can be charged for all types of motor fuel by 4.7 cents per litre.

On the Avalon Peninsula, that means regular unleaded self-serve gasoline can now sell for up to $1.168 per litre, or $1.175 in Corner Brook and area.

That's just under 19 cents more than what motorists were paying on Jan. 15, when gas prices fell below $1 in many areas for the first time in recent memory.

The steady increase in prices is being noticed, but the price is still well below prices from one year ago, when motorists on the Avalon Peninsula were paying $1.405 per litre.

Meanwhile, those who drive vehicles powered by diesel engines are also feeling the pinch, with the maximum price increased by 2.8 cents as of today, bringing the price on the Avalon Peninsula to $1.37 per litre.

A year ago, diesel was selling for $1.55.

Prices are generally higher in other regions of the province for motor fuels.

The price for all other types of petroleum products has gone down, with stove oil decreasing by 3.18 cents per litre.

Furnace oil and propane both decreased by less than a cent.
